Prof. Gerald Atkins is Professor of Biomedical Orthopaedic Research and a Senior Research Fellow of the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). He is Head of the Biomedical Orthopaedic Research Group and is Scientific Director of the University of Adelaide Centre for Orthopaedic & Trauma Research (COTR). COTR is a translational research centre comprising more than 10 Principal Investigators and their teams, working on diverse areas of orthopaedic-related research, including basic and applied human bone biology, bone cancer, metabolic bone disease, osteoarthritis pathobiology, fracture repair mechanisms, periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), orthopaedic and trauma surgery, spine, radiostereometric analysis (RSA), biomechanics, human gait and novel orthopaedic materials. His immediate research team comprises 3 post-doctoral fellows and 10 HDR students. His work has attracted research funding in excess of AUD$12M. He has published more than 138 peer-reviewed papers, reviews and book chapters, together cited more than 6,950 times. He currently serves as the Australian New Zealand Orthopaedic Research Society (ANZORS) representative to the International Combined Orthopaedic Research Society (ICORS). He previously served on the Council of the ANZBMS and on the editorial boards of several journals including the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. He is Chair and co-convener of the biennial Clare Valley Bone Meeting and has been involved in many international conferences as Plenary or invited speaker, session chair or organiser. He is a current member of several professional societies including ASBMR, ANZBMS, ORS and ANZORS.
