After obtaining a Ph.D. degree at The University of Bristol, England, Dr. Carlos D. Figueroa was nominated a permanent professorship at Faculty of Medicine of Universidad Austral de Chile (Valdivia, Chile) where he continues his research on the field of kallikreins, kinins and their receptors. Over the last 26 years, he has focused his scientific interests on the topics related to life-threatening disorders including hypertension, cancer and acute inflammation. With his expertise, he has done important contributions in these fields highlighting the importance of kinins and their receptors in blood pressure regulation and the role of kinin peptides as proinflammatory agents that modulate vascular permeability and other important functions of both neutrophils and endothelial cells. In fact, he was the first to describe the presence of kallikrein-1 as a new enzyme in the human neutrophil. He has trained many pre- and post-graduate students, published several book chapters and more than hundred full papers, edited/reviewed for many academic journals, worked as guest scientific in European universities, participated in several joint research projects with foreign funding, and received academic honors such as the Promotion Prize on Kallikreins and Kinins awarded by the E.K. Frey-E. Werle Foundation of the Henning L. Voight Family (Germany, 1991). In addition, he has co-authored one of the most cited reviews in the field of kallikreins and kinins and his work has been featured on the cover of important scientific journals. Original and traslational research has ever been a major task of his academic career
