Dr Giannopoulos was born in Piraeus, Greece in 1972. He studied Medicine in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and graduated in 1997. He served in the Hellenic Navy as reserve officer for 23 months. He received his specialty training in general surgery in the 4th Department of Surgery, Attikon Hospital, Athens, Greece. During his residency, he obtained a PhD in the prognostic significance of angiogenesis in pancreatic cancer from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He also attended a 2 – year MSc program in minimal invasive surgery. Dr Giannopoulos has always had a strong interest for medical technology and innovation. Two years after specialty training he attended a fellowship program in thyroid, endocrine and robotic surgery in Severance Hospital, Seoul, Korea under the direction of Prof. WY Chung. He is peer-reviewer in several journals focusing in surgery. He has published a number of papers pertaining a broad field in general surgery, as surgical oncology, trauma, laparoscopic and robotic surgery. As a consultant, he has served in several hospitals in Greece performing general surgery with a special interest in thyroid, parathyroid and laparoscopic surgery. Currently, he serves as consultant in Asklepeion Voulas General Hospital, Athens, Greece.
