Sharmila Fagoonee obtained her B.Sc. degree in Biology at the University of Mauritius and her M.Sc. degree in Cell and Molecular Biology at the University Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2 in France. Then, she moved to Italy where she did her Ph.D. thesis on heme and hemoglobin metabolism at the University of Turin. As post-doc fellow, she started working in the field of regenerative medicine, especially on embryonic stem cells and spermatogonial stem cells and their differentiative capacity, after a training at BIDMC, Harvard, Boston, USA. She is currently a National Research Council (CNR) researcher, and is studying new stem cell-based therapies and biomarkers (extracellular vesicles) for human liver diseases . She is also interested in clarifying the molecular mechanism whereby the RNA binding protein, ESRP1, has a pro-oncogenic role in human gastrointestinal tumors. She is co-investigator in diverse research projects, and is editorial board member and reviewer of several scientific journals.
