Prof. Rakesh K Tandon did his medical graduation (MBBS) and postgraduation (MD) from K G Medical College, Lucknow, India and gastroenterology training from Albany Medical College,NY,USA and then joined the faculty of Gastroenterology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi in 1972. Therein he treated patients, taught students and performed clinical research and rose to the position of head of gastroenterology. He retired from there in 2003 and joined PSRI Hospital, New Delhi, of which he is presently the Director. He is recognized internationally for his research and teaching experience through numerous awards, the most prominent of them being Master of World Gastroenterology Organisation, London (2009), Hon Fellowship of Royal College of Edinburgh (2003), and Fellowship of American Gastroenetrology Association (2009). He was the chief editor of Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology for the period, 2001-6 and is presently an Associate editor of BMC Gastroenterology. He has been on the editorial board of World Journal of Gastroenterology, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, Journal of Digestive Diseases and Journal of Association of Physicians of India. He has produced till now 297 original research publications, reviews and editorials, written four books and contributed 92 chapters in national and international books. He continues to participate in academic conferences and contribute through lectures and discussions and also through writing editorials and reviews. His major areas of research and practice have been pancreatobiliary diseases and therapeutic endoscopy.
