Dr. Rath holds a Professorship of Endoscopy and Molecular Imaging at the Ludwig Demling Endoscopy Center of Excellence at the University Hospital Erlangen. His research is focussed on real time histology during endoscopy, optical diagnosis in inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal polyps, computer-aided endoscopic diagnosis and artificial intelligence and novel endoscopic approaches for improved detection and characterization of colorectal neoplasms. After a three year training period in basic science and mucosal immunology at Harvard Medical School, Boston, Professor Rath also has a strong background and interest in the etiopathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases. Part of his research has been published as first or co-author in major journals such as Endoscopy, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, PNAS, Immunity, Nature, Hepatology, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Frontiers in Immunology, GUT, Gastroenterology, American Journal of Gastroenterology.
