Mauro Bortolotti MD was graduated with first class honours in Medicine and Surgery from the Medical School of the University of Bologna and has become specialist in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. He was Director of first level at the Department of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology of the S.Orsola-Malpighi Polyclinic, University of Bologna, Chief of the Gut Motility Laboratory and of the Section of Diagnosis and Therapy of Diseases of the Esophagus. He was Professor at the Postgraduate Schools of Internal Medicine and of Thoracic Surgery of the University of Bologna and Professor Emeritus at the Cagliari University. His main fields of research are esophageal, gastrointestinal and biliary functional disorders, which are investigated by means of stationary and ambulant manometry and pHmetry, gastric emptying technique, etc. He discovered innovative pharmachological treatments with nifedipine for acalasia and with capsaicin, contained in red pepper, for functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome. He devised a novel magnetic valve to prevent gastroesophageal reflux and faecaI incontinence and holds 8 invention patents concerning solutions to medical problems. He is author of more than 595 medical publications, 118 of which in the main Medical Journals, with more than 3,000 citations, and 12 collaborations to books. He was also the author of 4 books, including a monograph of 800 pages entitled "Dispepsia", concerning "pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapy of gastrointestinal and biliary disorders", and was the editor of 3 books and of an e-book entitled “Gastro-esophageal reflux” downloaded more than 20,000 times. He received 6 awards for his scientific activity and became International Member of the American Gastroenterological Association. He was a founding member of the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility and a member of the Steering Committee and of the Editorial Board of the Journal "Neurogastroenterology and Motility". Afterwards, he was member of the Steering Committee of the GISMAD (Italian Group for the study of the digestive tract motility) and was candidate for the post of Editor of GUT. He was invited as visiting professor to give lectures and do research by the Depts. of Thoracic Surgery and Gastroenterology of the University of Toronto (Canada), by the Medical Clinic of the University of S.Paulo (Brasil) and by the Chinese Science-Technology Exchange Center of Beijing (P.R.China), the last, unfortunately, not fulfilled. At present he is Associate Editor of the World Journal of Gastroenterology and works as a reviewer for various international medical journals.
