Dr. Serag Esmat completed medical school in 1992 followed by a medicine residency at the Kasr Al Aini School of Medicine, Cairo University, Egypt. He trained in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy at the department of internal medicine. He received his Masters in 1996 and PhD in 2007 in Internal medicine, both from the Cairo University. Esmat currently is  professor of Internal Medicine, Cairo University. Esmat is MD certified in internal medicine and is a consultant of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Esmat’s interests include research in the fields of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology.He is a member of the Ethical committee of the department of Internal Medicine, Cairo University. He was Member of the research team of the project entitled “Molecular screening of the Hemochromatosis gene mutation and polymorphism of Low- Density Lipoprotein receptor in Egyptian population infected with chronic hepatitis C virus” Funded by Science and Technology Development Fund Project ID: 1587. Esmat is currently the Principal Investigator in Cairo University of two research projects; the HALT-IT trial in collaboration with London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine which was published in the Lancet 2020; 395: 1927–36.  and the Project entitled “Deciphering trans-ethnic disease signatures of Ulcerative Colitis using deep RNA sequencing” in collaboration with Kiel University, Germany. Esmat supervised 9 MSc and 3 MD Theses. He has published over 21 peer-reviewed articles and reviewed over 100 manuscripts in ranked international journals.  He received several Awards from the department of Internal Medicine and Cairo University for his role in research and international publications.
