My research activity has been devoted to clinical nutrition applied to digestive diseases, especially the chronic intestinal failure, the home parenteral nutrition and the intestinal transplantation. Most of the studies was carried out as multicenter collaborations. Main research topics: Epidemiology the home parenteral nutrition and of the chronic intestinal failure Complications, safety and efficacy of the home parenteral nutrition Analysis of the appropriateness of the indications for intestinal transplantation Nutritional status and quality of life of patients with chronic intestinal failure, onhome parenteral nutrition and after intestinal transplantation . Role of lipid emulsions in the long-term home parenteral nutrition Role of plasma citrulline as an index enterocyte mass in patients with short bowel syndrome and after intestinal transplantation The results of the studies have greatly contributed to the definition of the role of the home parenteral nutrition and the intestinal transplantation in the treatment of chronic intestinal failure, as exemplified by two documents of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism, devised by the panels of international experts, of whom I was asked to be the coordinator: Pironi L et al. ESPEN endorsed recommendations. Definition and classification of intestinal failure in adults. Clin Nutr. 2015 Apr;34(2):171-80. Pironi L, et al. ESPEN guidelines on chronic intestinal failure in adults. Clin Nutr. 2016 Apr;35(2):247-307.
