Graduated (MD) from the Akdeniz University Medical School, Antalya, Turkey, where she also received PhD (pathology) and served as Assistant Professor. She was appointed as Associate Professor (2004-2009) and full Professor (2009-present) at the same institution. She has been teaching the residents pathological aspects of gastrointestinal, liver and pancreatic diseases since 2000. Most of her teaching sessions involve macroscopic and histopathological evaluation of surgical resections and biopsy materials. She has also been actively involved in teaching the Medical School students Pathology as part of an organized series of classes as well as during their rotation on department of Pathology. Research interest: angiogenesis and proliferation in gastric and colorectal cancers, ischemia-reperfusion injury of liver, angiogenesis in liver fibrosis, the role of apoptosis in experimental diabetes. Dr. Elpek has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in the field of surgical Pathology. Memberships: Turkish Society of Gastroenterology, Turkish Society of Pathology, Turkish Association for the study of the liver, European Society of Pathology.
