Dr. Fernando J Castro is a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine.  He trained in internal medicine at the University District Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico where he subsequently did his gastroenterology fellowship.  After completing his training, he joined the faculty at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine as assistant professor of medicine in the gastroenterology department and then held the same position at Southern Illinois University.  In 2004 he joined Cleveland Clinic Florida where he has served as gastroenterology training program director since.  He is the author of more than 30 manuscripts in diverse topics.  Initially in his career his research focused on hepatitis C but more recently on colonoscopy quality, screening and preparation of the patient.  His research has demonstrated the safety, efficacy and patient satisfaction of patients who ingest a four liter laxative entirely in the morning of an afternoon colonoscopy.  Dr. Castro has affiliation titles with four different medical schools, is a fellow of the American Gastroenterology Association and the American College of Gastroenterology, serves as a reviewer for multiple journals and has been an editorial board member of the World Journal of Gastroenterology since 2014.
