Professor Maurizio Pompili obtained his medical degree in 1983 and his PhD in 1992 at Catholic University of Sacred Heart of Rome, Italy, where he was nominated associate professor in the Faculty of Medicine in 2006. Specialized in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine, over the last 25 years his main scientific fields of interest have been abdomen ultrasound, liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and liver transplantation. In particular the main areas of clinical research have been the non invasive and invasive characterization of focal lesions in normal and cirrhotic liver, the development of Doppler and contrast enhanced ultrasound in the evaluation of preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions in liver cirrhosis, the early diagnosis, percutaneous ablation treatment and follow up of hepatocellular carcinoma, the long-term results of liver transplantation in Italy, and the pharmacological treatment of recurrent viral hepatitis after liver transplantation. Professor Pompili has published more than 90 full papers in indexed SCI reviewed journals and more than 20 chapters of book, has been peer reviewer for several medical journals, has participated to some national research projects, has been an invited speakers in many national and international congresses and educational meetingf, and has trained many postgraduate students in the fields of clinical hepatology and diagnostic/interventional abdomen ultrasound.
